An Estate agent, one Bolaji Adeoye, has been dragged before an Igbosere magistrate court for allegedly defrauding a Landlord to tune of N1.8 million.
The 49-year-old accused was said to have collected the money from some of the tenants of the landlord at No, 39, King George street in Onikan area of Lagos Island but refused to remit the money to the owner as promised.
The accused is standing trial on a count charge of stealing leveled against him by the police.
The prosecutor, Sargent Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that Adeoye committed the offence between 2010 and 2013.
According to him, the defendant collected the said sum which is rent for the years stipulated above, from the tenant of the complainant one Raufu Yusuf and refused to remit to him.
“The defendant collected the sum of N1.8 million, from the former tenant of Yusuf and failed to remit it to him, instead he converted it to his own personal use.”
“He used the money to develop his own property rather than giving it to the landlord’’
Osuji said that the offence committed is punishable under Section 287 (7) of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.
However the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him, by the police.
The Magistrate B.O Botoku granted him bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed, shoe evidence of tax payment to Lagos state government and their addresses verified.
Botoku, adjourned the case till June 16, 2017, for mention
